*FG releases N358m for Falcons, Eagles*
The Nigerian government has released more than a million dollars to cover outstanding win bonuses for the country’s football teams including the women’s team who have been in camp for 12 days protesting non-payment of their entitlements.
The office of the Accountant General on Friday released US$1,173,820.00 to pay outstanding win bonuses for the Super Eagles in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers and for the Super Falcons participation at the 10th Women’s Africa Nations Cup in Cameroon.
On Wednesday, the Falcons staged a protest march to the National Assembly in Abuja to press for the payment of their bonuses and allowances after they won a record eighth women’s continental crown in Cameroon.
They carried placards with various inscriptions demanding they be paid their money and have vowed not to release the trophy they won in Cameroon until they are paid.
They have been holed up in their Abuja hotel since they returned to Nigeria from Cameroon in protest over the non-payment of their entitlements despite reassurances from top officials including the country’s sports minister.
It is however unclear whether the players will leave their hotel following the development since they were yet to get alert as at 6pm yesterday. Nigeria’s Super Eagles will also now be paid a win bonus of $5,000-a-player for the victories against Zambia and Algeria in the qualifying series for the 2018 World Cup to be hosted by Russia.
The Eagles are on top in their qualifying group for Russia 2018 on six points from two matches. Cameroon are second with two points, while both Zambia and Algeria have a point each.
