194 Kwara indigenes held in 5 Lagos prisons -Official

Out of a total of 9,044 inmates detained in the five prisons across Lagos State between January and March, 2019, no fewer than 194 of them are indigenes of Kwara State.
This was contained in the first quarterly report of the Lagos State Ministry of Justice Criminal Information System for 2019, which was released yesterday.
The five detention centres in which the inmates are been held include Ikoyi prison, Kirikiri Medium prison, Kirikiri Maximum prison, Female prison, and Badagry prison.
The report indicated that 65 per cent of the inmates were detained for stealing and breach of public peace. According to the report, Ogun State have the highest number of inmates – 422 in the prisons.
With 359 of its indigenes in Lagos prisons, Oyo State has the second highest number, followed by Lagos with 276 indigenes; Osun State with 208 indigenes; Imo, 191 indigenes; and Ondo with 152 indigenes. Taraba has the least figure with 6 indigenes.
While 98 per cent of the total inmates are males, 80 per cent inmates are between the ages of 18 and 40 years. The report further said that 78 per cent of the inmates were awaiting trial, while 15 per cent had been convicted, just as 2 per cent had been condemned, with 5 per cent remanded.
It also revealed that at least, 40 of the awaiting-trial inmates had spent between one and nine years in prison without being taken to court for prosecution.
The report identified Eti-Osa, Apapa, Alimosho, Ojo, and Ikorodu as the top five areas where the inmates were arrested for various offences.
According to the report, majority of the inmates have been granted bail in the sum of N5,000 but they have been unable to meet their bail.
