Kwara Youth and Drug Abuse: Sitting On A Time Bomb
By: GARBA, Saad Adors
Recent revelation by National Drug Law Enforcement Agency(NDLEA) is far beyond a mere confirmatory bias on the rate of drug abuse in Kwara state. It was a pure revelation of the true picture of the state's path to doom (if neglected). Recently, NDLEA released a statement ranking Kwara state as the state with highest abusers of drugs in the Northern Nigeria. That's to say, Kwara state is literally with highest abusers of drugs in Nigeria as it is statistically substantiated that northern part of Nigeria houses drug abusers the most.
Unfortunately, the revelation didn't hit us as a surprise (some of us who had been showing concerns), owing to the rate at which our youths engage in this hurricane of social vice, drug abuse. It is sad to know that every 3 out of 5 youths are abusing one drug or the other. Most guys with superstitious myth of shifting their girlfriend's womb constitute a high percentage in this ruining practise hence, their engagement in abuse of various drugs that include tramadol
.
More so, consumption of drugs like Marijuana, Codeine, Cocaine, Heroine, Rephnol, Rochi, Alcohol to mention but a few is now rampant among our teeming youths (ladies inclusive), in those we hope for a brighter and promising future. It is pathetic. Different health challenges ranging from mental disorders to other medical complications consequently become rampant too.
Show me a compound within Ilorin metropolis that doesn't house at least a victim of this menace!
However, the most pathetic of the whole thing is the way and manner the government and stakeholders are reacting to this cancerous issue. Neglect and silence of family heads, community heads and religious leaders on this issue are not only appalling but also hypocritical. It's high time we took the bull by the horns.
Radical approach is needed to tackle drug abuse in this state as it is eating up really fast. State of emergency is recommended to be declared in tackling this moral decadence, because of its disastrous resultant effects. Our dear state would be left in doom if our human resources keep going astray instead of channelling their youthful capability to help develop the state to greatness. The government and stakeholders are therefore tasked to put up a lasting measure to curb this hurricane of vice to help save our dear state from the time bomb it's sitting on.
