Kwara Speaker Advocates Youth Inclusion in Federal Governance
July 29th, 2019
The Speaker, Kwara State House of Assembly has called for youth inclusion in President Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government.
He made this call while receiving a delegation of YIAGA Africa, a Civil Society Organization that championed the #NotTooYoungToRun advocacy.
The Speaker, who commended the Governor of Kwara State, Alh. AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for his passion for the youth said "our Governor is a staunch supporter and believer in the young people, he has always said that young people would occupy significant percent of his cabinet. This is because the Governor recognises and appreciates the significance of the youths in the revolution in Kwara state".
He, however, noted the exclusion of youths in the 43 ministerial nominees list sent to the Nigeria Senate, he said " with no youths among the ministerial nominees, invariably the minister of youths won't be a youth. We must let the President know that we also have young people capable of being Ministers. We have to do more to get this message to Mr. President".
Hon. Yakubu revealed that the 9th Assembly is building a new foundation. He said "9th Kwara Assembly has legislative agenda and every member has constituency offices. Our case in Kwara is peculiar, we are starting from the scratch and building new foundations, aside addressing infrastructural deficit, facilitating sustainable empowerment of our people takes a place of pride in our hearts".
While appreciating YIAGA Africa for leading the #NotTooYoungToRun advocacy for which five of the at 9th Kwara Assembly are beneficiaries, he implored the organization to encourage educated youths to be active in politics, lamenting that larger percentage of educated and exposed young people who usually lamenting on social media don't show practical interest in politics and that has to change if we must take over.
Hon. Abdulgafar Ayinla who joined other young legislators in hosting YIAGA Africa team assured they will seize the opportunity offered them as young people would be used to bring more youths into the system with their convincing performance, he said "we will never disappoint you for believing in us".
Dr. Ernest Ereke, who led the YIAGA Africa delegation said "we have come on a working visit to congratulate and celebrate you as the Speaker, remind you it is time for serious business and prove to the world that the young people have the capacity to lead".
Ereke added that "it is not enough for us to campaign for young people but also rally round, support and encourage them so they don't fail, for us to prove the naysayers wrong. Consequently, we are here to establish a good working relationship, understanding you have no choice than to perform, because that will determine the fate of other young aspiring leaders".
End.
