QUALITY EDUCATION IS A FUNDAMENTAL HUMAN RIGHT: BRAIN BUILDERS INTERNATIONAL TASKS GOVERNMENT TO COMMIT RESOURCES TO EDUCATION
The International Day for Education is another opportunity to engage stakeholders on the importance of education in attaining sustainability and why it is a must to invest in it. The United Nations General Assembly recognizes this importance thereby setting this day aside to honour education and its centrality to human well-being and sustainable development.
Last year, during the International Youth day, Brain Builders International organized an event to commemorate the day. It brought together youths across the country to deliberate on the challenges to the acquisition of quality education and 21st-century skills. The event with the theme: “Transforming Education and Contemporary Skills Sustainably: Who has the biggest role to play?” was led by a team of 10 discussants who identified the underlying factors responsible for the rotten state of our education sector such as inadequate funding, lack of infrastructures, obsolete curriculums, etc.
The theme of the 2020 International Day for Education is ‘Learning for people, planet, prosperity and peace’, emphasises the all-encompassing nature of education and how it is central to the collective development of the world. According to UNESCO, this year’s celebration is framed as “inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong learning for all”.
As we enter the last decade for the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals, Education remains a crucial part of the process of meeting all the goals by 2030. This is why we are calling the Nigerian Government to commit to adequately financing the education sector by increasing the budgetary allocation to education. The pressing issues that must be addressed urgently include: reducing the number of out-of-school children, overhauling of the curriculum to meet international standards, combat examination malpractice, infrastructural development, focusing on learning outcomes, training of teachers, etc. These areas are core to educational reforms in the country.
Education is a fundamental human right and we at Brain Builders International reaffirm our commitment to it. We hope the Nigerian government takes a cue from this by committing resources and finances into the sector in order to attain sustainability.
