The police in the Plateau State capital have decorated dozens of youth volunteers, who are serving to aid in intelligence gathering to help curb crime.
The commissioning of the Angwan Rogo Area Command of the Neighbourhood Watch, as the volunteer corps is called, happened, yesterday, at the area's police division headquarters where representatives of the Special Task Force (STF), a multi security outfit peace operation of the military and the police; as well as the state government was present.
Mr. Umbuga Jatau, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) serving as the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), and the representative of the STP, Mr. Frank Akhabue, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) decorated the corps with ranks, as the occasion also saw the presentation of certificates of excellence to stakeholders helping in curbing crime in the area.
Angwann Rogo, a popular slum in the Jos-North area, is notorious for surging crime, and was at the centre of the violent hostilities that rocked the state for over a decade, killing hundreds.
"But peace has returned here, as crime has disappeared from our part of the city," Huzaifa Ibrahim Abdullahi, the Area Commandant of the volunteer corps told cheering dignitaries at the event of his decoration. "We volunteered t serve as young men because we believe in ourselves and our city. We are out to tell criminals that enough is enough i this part of the city."
Alhaji Guda Usman, who heads the local vigilante in the area commended the community spirit in the young men, and sought for community contribution to pool funds for their welfare.
