Assault on Teacher :: Here is our Resolution - Kwara Min Education 


Kwara Must Change, NUT, Ministry of Education and others meet to resolve case of  teachers assault

Leading Pro-democracy group in Kwara state, Kwara Must Change, National Union of Teachers (NUT), Ministry of Education and others met on Monday to resolve case of public assault against a teacher,  Mrs Ahmed Rukayat by the head mistress, Alhaja Ibrahim Titilayo Olomu, in Magaji Aare LGEA School, at Idi Ape, in Ilorin, the Kwara State Capital. 

The meeting, which was called at the instance of Ministry of Education was an effort to address the issue of assault at public school, raised by Kwara Must Change. 

Following report of public assault against a teacher, Mrs Rukayat by the head mistress of the school, Alhaja Olomu and subsequent demand for justice by the public, relevant authorities, including Ilorin East local government authorities  promptly intervened in the matter to ensure an amicable settlement.

Representative of Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Education, Alhaji Oleshin who spoke at the meeting stated that, no civil servant is permitted by law to assault a junior officer, irrespective of the offense, adding that all infractions by workers have been properly dealt with in the civil service rules and he assured that the rules shall be applied accordingly in this matter.

Also speaking, is the Chairman of National Union of Teachers (NUT), Ilorin East local government chapter, Comrade Danmegori, who maintained that it is unacceptable for teachers to be treated as kids by their Head Mistress, noting that such conduct is outrightly condemned by the NUT. Comrade Danmegori also warned HM's to desist from such conduct, urging them to see teachers as colleagues, rather than inferior. 

In his reaction, the Secretary of Kwara Must Change, Comrade Hassan Yusuf Adio who attended the meeting on behalf of the group explained that, Kwara Must Change is only interested in upholding human dignity, against degrading treatment of human person. 

According to Comrade Yusuf, the matter was aggravated because the culprit failed to apologize to the victim as earlier demanded by the group, noting that if apology had been made earlier, the matter may not have lingered or escalated. 

In the emotional meeting, which lasted for hours, the headmistress full of tears eventually accepted her wrong doing in the matter and apologized to the teacher. In total remorse, she said her action was a mistake and it wouldn't repeat itself in the future.

Mrs Rukayat, who accepted apology of the headmistress in tears also pleaded to the authorities to pardon her, as she doesn't want the headmistress sanctioned as a result of the issue.

Others at the meeting, particularly the Magaji of the community and PTA chairman, Alhaji Jogbojogbo also called for  forgiveness and    restitution, emphasising that all workers at the school are members of the same family and should treat each other as such. He pleaded that the headmistress should not be taken away from the school because of her good work. 

The matter was promptly taken over by Ilorin East local government officials, led by the Education Secretary, Alhaji Abdullahi Hassan and transferred to the  headquarters at Oke Oyi for subsequent action, after which a disciplinary committee from state universal basic education board (subeb) and ministry of education is to make appropriate sanctions.

Participants at the meeting include the Education Secretary of Ilorin East local government, Alhaji Abdullahi Hassan and other officials of the local government,  representatives of Ministry of Education led by Alh Oleshin, Chairman of National Union of Teachers (NUT) in Ilorin East local government,  Comrade Danmegori and other principal officers of the union, Chief of Idi Ape community and Chairman of SDC and PTA, Majagi Jogbojogbo, State AOPHSON Chairman, Com Muyideen Ibrahim and other AOPHSON local government chairmen, such as Chairman of Moro LG,  former AOPHSON chairman Ilorin East LG and some members of the Association
