WHY LAI AND COHORTS WANT MODIBBO KAWU OUT BY ALL MEANS.
Since his resumption into office as the DG, National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) in 2016, Mallam Is'haq Modibbo Kawu started facing lots of challenges from those who think his appointment as the DG should have been from their political camp. But as a broadcasting guru with over 40 years experience, President Mohammadu Buhari found him worthy for the job. He was simply appointed based on merit.
Since then , those who want Kawu out of the NBC have been making frantic efforts to instigate fraudulent accusations against him. Realised that they cannot achieve their agenda through the current court case (as most of the allegations are frivolous), the traducers have recently resorted to instigation of staff of the commission to lead a protest against him.
Many of their plans against the DG has continue to fail and the question most people are asking is why do they want Mallam Modibbo Kawu out of that place by all dubious means?
Not far fetch though, a recent revelation by people familiar with the situation has it that while all other parastatals under the Federal Ministry of Information get their budgets through the Minister, the NBC act does not allow ministerial control of the finances of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).
The National Assembly, according to an impeccable source close to the Information Committees in the National Assembly, appropriates and approves NBC funds directly. And they say that NBC gets its funds from internally generated revenue, with little coming from government direct budget, except salaries. Infact, like JAMB, National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has paid billions of naira to the Federal government.
This Independent funding of National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) is one of the problems that Mallam Is'haq Modibbo has with those who are fighting him.
The traducers led by the Minister of Information don't have control of NBC funds unlike other agencies. They believe such a "juicy" Commission must be controlled by them through a puppet DG.
The fearless and gallant stance of Kawu in not being a puppet in the hands of these desperate people remains the central point of all these brouhaha.
That is why they are desperate to remove him and replace him by all dubious mean with their own puppet.
The court case is gradually coming to an end and the truth will be unveiled. As it stands eight witnesses have so far been called. The Honorable Minister, Lai Mohammed who was listed as a witness failed to appear as one of the star witnesses. The ICPC case has been closed and hence the application for no case submission filed.
